Teen and adolescent years can be some of the most formative years of our lives.
It’s a time of self-exploration that is riddled with “firsts.” Our first crushes or romantic relationships. Our first tastes of autonomy or independence with milestones like driving or first jobs. Our first big achievements or accomplishments, like making the honors program or winning a competition.
On the other end of the spectrum, this is when we experience many of life’s hardships for the first time. It could be the first time we lose someone we care about, like a grandparent. The first time we feel isolation or self-doubt, with challenges like bullying or body-image issues. The first time we feel real stress or pressure as we balance school, homework, extracurriculars, and relationships.
ALL OF THESE THINGS — the EXCITING, the CHALLENGING, and EVERYTHING in BETWEEN — are CHANGE.
Change is difficult to navigate at any age, but especially in our formative years. Teen therapy can help to navigate these transitions while building healthy coping skills and a stronger sense of self.
Teen Therapy and Adolescent Therapy services are designed to support young people, ages 12-18, as they navigate a world full of near-constant change, challenges, and new experiences.
What is Teen & Adolescent Therapy in New Jersey?
We believe that any young person could benefit from teen and adolescent therapy, but it’s especially helpful if your teen is navigating challenges such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Self-esteem and self-image issues
- Anger management or behavior problems
- Substance abuse and addition
- Family conflict and relationship issues
- Peer pressure and social skills
- Academic and school-related stress
- ADHD
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Eating disorders and body-image issues
- Identity issues related to sexual orientation or gender
- And more!
If your teen has expressed that they are struggling in any of these areas, or if you and your child are simply interested in increasing their confidence and resilience, teen and adolescent therapy can support you.
How can Teen & Adolescent Therapy help?
Some common benefits of teen therapy are:
Navigating Challenges
Young people are navigating challenges like depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma every day. Without the right support, reflection, or skills, these challenges can inhibit social, academic, and personal fulfillment.
Teen and Adolescent Therapy can provide a supportive and safe environment to get to the root of these challenges and build coping skills and strategies for daily life.
Increasing Self-Esteem
Our adolescent and teenage years are extremely impressionable times in our lives – and with the increasing presence of social media in kids’ lives, it can be difficult to find a strong sense of self and not get lost in the comparison game.
Teen and Adolescent Therapy uses tools like mindfulness, positive psychology, and CBT to help young people identify the unhelpful thoughts they are having about themselves, unpack their own values and interests, and create outlets for peace amid the noise of their day-to-day lives.
Improving Relationships
Young people are learning how to navigate friendships, romantic relationships, and ever-changing relationships with their siblings and parents as they grow and learn who they are.
Teen and Adolescent Therapy can help them to hone their communication skills, recognize their needs and those of others, and instill a strong sense of self-worth that will ultimately help strengthen relationships throughout their lives.
Coping with Change
Teens are dealing with change every minute of every day. Their bodies are changing, their relationships are changing, their workloads and responsibilities are changing. Throw in common stressors and changes like divorce, death, or moving, and it becomes clear why young people could benefit from support as they navigate these ebbs and flows.
Teen and Adolescent Therapy helps to build resilience and teach healthy coping mechanisms that create a strong foundation for mental health as they transition into adulthood.
