FAQs about therapy in NJ
How can I tell if I need a therapist?
There is no “right” or “wrong” time to see a therapist. If you’re interested in seeing whether therapy can help you or your loved ones, we encourage you to reach out!
With that being said, we understand that navigating mental health services can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re new to therapy. Here are some common reasons why people start working with a therapist:
- Mental health issues like depression and anxiety disorders
- Experiencing trauma
- Behavioral issues
- Life transitions
- Grief and loss
- Challenges understanding and expressing emotions
- Family conflict
- Peer relationship issues
- Self-esteem issues
- Stress
Keep in mind that this isn’t an exhaustive list. And since we’re a private pay practice, we’re able to see clients without a referral or pre-existing diagnosis.
How do I start seeing a therapist?
Because we want to make starting therapy as streamlined as possible, our new client process follows five steps:
- Schedule your Get Started Call. In this 15-20-minute call, we’ll chat about which services may be the best fit for your family.
- Initial session. This is a parents-only session where we’ll gather the information we need to kick things off.
- Sessions 2 & 3. These sessions are for your child/teen/adolescent only. It’s vital for us to have one-on-one time with them to make accurate assessments and treatment plans.
- Parent follow-up. Afterward, we’ll check in with you to make sure we’re all on the same page moving forward.
- Ongoing sessions. Let the work begin! Following the treatment plan we agreed upon, we’ll engage in regular sessions to help your kiddo progress toward their goals.

What is the difference between therapy and counseling?
The terms “therapy” and “counseling” are often used interchangeably. However, depending on the context, they can sometimes mean different things.
Therapy is a service provided by licensed (and supervised pre-licensed) mental health counselors. Your clinician might be a licensed professional counselor, marriage and family therapist, or clinical social worker.
Counseling is another word used for therapy, but it may also be used to describe case management or general support provided by human services professionals.
At Love Play Grow, our highly trained clinicians provide mental health care (i.e. therapy). Feel free to reach out if you have questions about which services might be the right fit for your family.
