Our approach to family therapy
We know that all families are doing their best to be a healthy, happy, functioning unit. At the same time, challenges can get in the way and keep families from having the kinds of relationships that they want.
That’s where family therapy comes in. When you attend therapy together, you can get the support (and tools) you need to grow stronger than ever.
Family therapy (also called family counseling) is a form of psychotherapy that involves the entire family unit. You and your loved ones will work with a trained mental health professional to identify the struggles that you’re facing, learn more about each other, and find creative solutions to your challenges.
We use many different methods to help you and your family, including play therapy, CBT, and more. We may also recommend engaging in individual therapy alongside your work in family counseling. Most importantly, we work with you to customize your family’s treatment plan based on your exact needs, struggles, and goals.

FAQs about family therapy
What are the different types of family counseling?
Therapists use many different methods to help families. At Love Play Grow, we use techniques like play therapy, sand tray therapy, CBT, DBT, and more depending on your family’s situation and what you hope to get out of our work together.
Other family therapists might use different techniques. Family systems therapy, emotionally focused therapy (EFT), structural family therapy, and solution-focused brief therapy are a few other methods that family counselors use.
What is the difference between a family therapist and a family counselor?
The terms “family therapy” and “family counseling” are often used interchangeably. However, sometimes people may use them in reference to different services.
Helping professionals in different settings, like schools or the foster care system, might be called “counselors” because they support families. Yet, they may not be licensed therapists.
At Love Play Grow, all of our clinicians are licensed therapists with a graduate degree in their field, thousands of hours of clinical practice, and advanced training and certification in various areas.
What is the difference between family and group counseling?
Family counseling and group counseling are similar in the sense that they both take place with a group of people. However, family counseling takes place with a group of several family members versus a group of strangers with similar challenges.
Group therapy is typically centered around a certain theme, such as learning coping skills for anxiety. The people who attend are individuals who resonate with the topic and are interested in getting support from others navigating similar issues.
In family therapy, you’ll work through family challenges, strengthen your relationships with each other, learn conflict resolution skills, and more.
